A global movement united for the restoration of nature

Rewilding is a global movement shaped by thousands of people working to restore nature and its ability to support life, from ecosystems and wildlife to communities and livelihoods.

By 2019, rewilding had reached a turning point. Gaining momentum worldwide, there was a clear need for a unifying global vision and an umbrella to connect rewilders across continents and move the movement forward together.

This led to the creation of the Global Charter for Rewilding the Earth, setting out 12 guiding principles that define rewilding and what makes it distinct.

In 2021, the Global Rewilding Alliance was founded to bring these efforts together, strengthen global collaboration and mainstream rewilding as a response to the intertwined climate, biodiversity, and social crises.

3 Pillars of our strategy

Connecting rewilders and communicating their work

We catalyse the global rewilding movement by connecting organisations, practitioners, scientists, and communities across regions and ecosystems. By fostering collaboration, sharing best practices, and breaking down silos, we strengthen collective impact, accelerate progress, and help raise visibility and credibility of the movement globally.

Understanding & sharing the benefits of rewilding

We gather and synthesise scientific evidence on the ecological, climate, and socio-economic benefits of rewilding, translating complex research into clear, accessible insights. We communicate the hope grounded in real-world solutions already being implemented across the globe.

Influencing policy change

By uniting voices across the movement and presenting strong scientific evidence, we help shape policies that enable wildlife recovery, ecosystem restoration, and long-term resilience, creating the conditions for rewilding to scale globally.

At the Global Rewilding Alliance, our mission is to see rewilding mainstreamed in science, policy, and practice and bringing ecosystems around the world back into balance, in a thriving state for wildlife and local communities.

The 5 stages of the Rewilding Movement

The rewilding movement is built on solid foundations and continues to grow. Today, we are preparing to scale and getting ready for exponential impact!

Invention

1990s
Rewilding was conceived as a bold new idea, challenging conventional conservation by reimagining how nature could recover at meaningful scales.

Experimentation

2000s & 2010s
Rewilders around the world began testing these ideas in practice, learning through hands-on projects that letting nature lead could deliver powerful results.

Preparing for Global Scaling

Today
With proven successes, shared principles, and a growing global network, the movement is now poised for rapid expansion and coordinated impact.

Scaling

Next Decade
Rewilding scales through policy, finance, and institutions, enabling ambitious goals like 30×30 and large-scale land and ocean recovery to become reality.

Mainstreaming

Future
Rewilding becomes a widely accepted, central approach to human wellbeing and planetary resilience, shaping how societies coexist with nature.

As part of our scaling strategy, we support the emergence of national rewilding organisations, helping to establish legal foundations, build early teams, and lay the groundwork for long-term impact. This work is already taking shape in several regions around the world.
