Leadership Team

Alister Scott
Executive Director
Strategy, Partnerships, Communications. Read Alister’s profile

Alister is the Alliance’s director, setting the tone for day-to-day action. He builds the Alliance and aligns the work in narrative, scope & scale.
The local extinction of the corn crake, witnessed in Enniskillen at the age of 16, changed the trajectory of Alister’s life. From campaigning, advising and consulting to being an honorary professor at University College London; from Board roles to coaching founders, Alister’s 40-year career is still catalysing change at scale.
Playing a brief but central role in achieving World Park status for Antarctica in 1991 opened his eyes to the effectiveness of ‘leaning behind the head of a pin’ to create change. This achievement was followed by a doctorate at the University of Sussex’s Science Policy Research Unit, exploring the world of experts, how they communicate, and the relevance of their research. Helping to run a new research programme on Global Environmental Change, founding a consulting firm called The Knowledge Bridge Ltd and supporting founders and senior teams in at least 20 organisations built further experience in spearheading a movement.
A career culminating in March 2025, when Alister became Executive Director of the Global Rewilding Alliance. Being a catalyst takes courage, discipline, hard work, humility, a great team, care for self and a sense of humour. He now contributes to creating a kinder, wilder and more sustainable world. And making big change happen.

Karl Wagner
Director of Campaigns
Leads global campaigns and advocacy. Read Karl’s profile

Karl Wagner is one of the three founders of the Global Rewilding Alliance and its Managing Director until March 2025. He is now responsible for campaigns and advocacy.
Karl is Austrian, born in 1952, is widowed since 2019 and has three sons. He lives partly near Vienna and partly in a 400 year old cottage in the Alps. He has a masters in limnology (freshwater ecology) from the University of Vienna.
Karl calls himself “a biologist by training and a campaigner by profession”. After a three year world trip in the 70s he joined the environmental movement. Since the early 80s Karl managed 8 large national, regional or global campaigns, mostly for WWF International and held several CEO positions. In addition, Karl conceptualized, supervised and consulted about 30 campaigns. He actually never stopped campaigning. A good friend from the US told him once “Karl, even in hell you will run a campaign for air-conditioning”.
Karl’s inner voyage led him to become more politically active and as a result he started operating out of Brussels working on EU legislation. In the early 2000s Karl managed two campaigns on EU legislation (on fisheries – CFP reform – and on chemicals- REACH legislation). He remained involved in Brussels-based campaigning since then. Between 2021-2024 he led a US/European team on influencing EU’s Renewable Energy Directive.
As a next step Karl embraced holistic and systemic thinking and joined the Club of Rome International as Director for External Relations, between 2009 – 2015.
Around that time he got involved with the WILD Foundation on wilderness issues, which culminated in 2020 in the founding of the Global Rewilding Alliance.

Magnus Sylvén
Director Science-Policy-Practice
Convening evidence and influencing policy, globally. Read Magnus’ profile
Magnus is the Director of Science, Policy and Practice, responsible for ensuring that existing scientific knowledge relevant to rewilding land, freshwater and sea is analysed, summarised, and made available to shape global policy and practical rewilding action across ecosystems and continents. The global policy work has included engagement with CBD, UNFCCC, UNCCD, and the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands.
A key element of this work focuses on the critical role wild animals play in shaping ecosystem functions, and how these functions contribute to the four pillars of ecosystem services: supporting, regulating, provisioning, and cultural/wellbeing. A core message throughout is the importance of placing rewilding within a human and sustainable development perspective.
The long career in nature conservation, including work with WWF (Sweden & International), the Wild Foundation, Rewilding Europe, the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency, and as an independent consultant, has generated invaluable knowledge of how to meet biodiversity objectives across a wide range of socio-economic and cultural contexts. These experiences are now being brought to fruition through his work at the Global Rewilding Alliance.
Magnus was one of the three co-founders of the GRA in 2020/2021; the two others were Vance Martin (President of the Wild Foundation) and Karl Wagner, a longtime friend and colleague at WWF. The Global Charter of Rewilding the Earth, with the 12 guiding principles, and which serves as the foundation of the GRA, was co-authored together with Tom Butler, a long-time conservation activist and writer who has concentrated primarily on wilderness and biodiversity.

Isaline Tihon
Partnerships & Engagement
Onboarding & Africa, Europe and South America Lead. Read Isaline’s profile

Growing up across Africa, bathing in the many different cultures and wildness each country offered, set the foundation for Isaline’s drive and passion for the living world and the way we interact with it. A thesis on the effect of artificial waterholes on the migration patterns of the African elephant, a position as outdoors educator for children and a commitment to wildlife rehabbing sealed the deal as a trailblazing networker in the rewilding ecosphere. In the Alliance, Isaline works as the Africa, Europe and South America lead, as well as Rangelands and Animating the Carbon Cycle coordination, and supports onboarding new partners. Here’s to connecting with people over rewilding.

Swathi Palanichamy
Partnerships & Engagement
Asia-Pacific Lead & Policy Researcher.Read Swathi’s profile

Swathi is a bridge-builder, transforming innovation to actionable strategies and linking research to real impact. Her first outcome at the Alliance was a seamless framework on how to attract corporate sponsors to wildlife corridors. Coupled with a Master’s in Economics and Policy of Energy and the Environment from University College London, she readily tackled policy interest in rewilding. As a South Asian, she’s keen on expanding our network in the region and the larger Asia-Pacific, and helping spotlight these partners’ uniquely beautiful stories. A long-term vision of hers is a practical policy guide for rewilders far and wide.
