To reverse species decline and stabilise the climate, every contribution helps. Our newest Alliance Partner, eMission-X is leading a quiet, yet understated revolution in land management across Northern Germany.
Founded in 2023, eMission-X has already purchased 5 hectares of land, formerly used for forestry and agriculture, and is working to rewild it. Its approach combines natural regeneration of scrub and trees, alongside kickstarting agroforestry with fruit and nut trees. As Benedict MacDonald’s Orchard explains, scruffy agroforestry systems can quickly become a hugely abundant haven for wildlife. True to the nature-led, human-assisted spirit of rewilding, eMission-X has a strict non-intervention policy and no specific end habitat targets. Founder, Till Mertens, describes first encountering the word ‘Rewilding’ as a lightbulb moment that shaped eMission-X’s approach.
Looking ahead, the small team at eMission-X has bold ambitions to expand its land holdings to 100 hectares over the next 5 years. Much of this work will provide safe habitats for wolves in areas where they are vulnerable to hunting, especially important given the EU’s recent, ecologically unjustified decision to lower the protection status of wolves.
