Rewilding is happening now all over the world, both on land and at sea, bringing back key species and restoring entire ecosystems at all scales. We are now an alliance of over 200 organisations that are restoring nature around the world.
This week we introduce you to a rewilding membership that restores nature across a wide range of ecosystems, and gets everyday people participating in the return of healthy ecosystems for people and planet. Read about the return of Flooded Forests, Ocelots, Coral Reefs, Oyster Gardens, Ground Squirrels, and the enchanting underwater Cave Salamanders! The list could go on… but let’s dive in!
We warmly welcome Mossy Earth!
Turning everyday people into rewilders
Partner Organisation: Mossy Earth
Location: United Kingdom, Scotland, Portugal (including Selvagens islands, Deserta Grande), Spain, Italy, Croatia, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Romania, Slovakia, Indonesia, Ireland, Benin, Sao Tome and Principe (Central Africa), Madagascar, USA, Ecuador
Mossy Earth works with partners around the world to transform the contributions of people directly into impactful rewilding of diverse ecosystems and species. Their efforts are concentrated in 4 different landscapes; Scotland, Portugal, Indonesia and Ecuador, where core teams focus on restoring key ecological processes, functions and connectivity.
And their impact doesn’t stop there. Embracing global connectivity, they’re lending a hand to project’s worldwide that are bringing back thriving wild ecosystems.
The best part is that they invite you, another piece of the rewilding puzzle, to be a part of it. They act as a bridge between all sorts of people, making contributions large and small, and the crucial rewilding of ecosystems around the world. They call it: ‘rewilding by the people, for the people’.
At sea, they are helping to restore coral reefs, oyster gardens and kelp forests; focusing on community-led marine enhancement in their Scotland hub and building resilient coral reefs in their Indonesia hub.

On land, protecting woodlands and restoring forests to places they have disappeared with a healthy mix of native species, fit with healthy understories; focusing on protecting Amazon rainforest that borders the most biodiverse place on earth in their Ecuador hub and protecting and enhancing the integrity of the Mira ecological corridor in their Portugal hub.

And restoring crucial wetland habitats such as flooded forests and wet meadows. Yes, flooded forests – just another of their audacious and hands-on approach to rewilding.
Within all of these, the iconic keystone species that shape these landscapes are returning, and with them encourage further biodiversity. To name a few, white-clawed crayfish in Italy’s Central Apennines are making a comeback in the rivers, the Scottish landscape is being replenished with, to date, 6640 aspen trees on land and native oysters restoration on the coast, birds of prey such as red kites are returning to our skies, and some unexpectedly important species too: termites that could help to reduce desertification in Africa, ground squirrels that have found refuge in airport landing strips, and rare but enchanting underwater cave salamanders.
Mossy Earth’s palette of projects demonstrate just how restoring nature can take all shapes and forms. And just how anyone, anywhere, can be involved in rewilding.
‘How?’ We hear you ask!
Sign up in under a minute and track the impact that your contribution makes, receive management plans, 360° photos, GPS coordinates, maps, field reports and on-the-ground videos. Transparent as can be; they publish all of their actions, costs and impact.
We hope that you enjoyed getting to know our wonderful Alliance Partner. More to come!
